Fun At The Farmer's Market

Farmer's markets are the best. I love to see the crowds of people gathered in the great outdoors to appreciate fresh flowers, veggies, baked goods, and if you live in Wisconsin like me, lots and lots of cheese. I happen to live right near the largest farmer's market in my state. Every Saturday in the fall and spring—weather permitting, of course—I venture over to Capitol Square in Madison to enjoy everything the farmer's market has to offer. This past weekend was the first actually-springy spring Saturday in Madison so you know I had to be there! Now let's get into my most recent farmer's market adventure :)

If it were up to me, I'd buy something from every stand in the whole market. Unfortunately, my dorm room doesn't really allow me the space or necessity for the bountiful fresh herbs, vegetables, and houseplants that my heart desires. Because of this, I kept my farmer's market pickups to just a few treats I could enjoy in the moment. Nonetheless, I was still completely satisfied with this visit just like all the rest!

The first treat I enjoyed was something I had been seeking out before I even stepped onto the premises—my favorite farmer's market find: a berry chocolate zucchini bar from this tiny vegan baked goods stand hiding amongst the other carts. The photo can't do this treat justice. You'll just have to trust me and try it for yourself.

Around halfway through the square, my friends and I decided to stop at a nearby coffee shop, Colectivo, for a little latte break. While not necessarily a farmer's market find, I can always find an excuse to make a coffee run.

Now back to the market! Next up, I got an order of platanos maduros, AKA sweet plantains! I would consider myself a pretty big fan of sweet plantains, but I had never seen them at a farmer's market! I was afraid these wouldn't compare to my favorites (from Cubanita's in Milwaukee), but I was wrong! These guys were very authentic, very sweet, and very delicious! 10/10 recommend!

That wraps up my purchases from my most recent farmer's market trip! I know it doesn't seem like much, but in this case, quality over quantity truly does apply. I recommend that all of you get out there and find a local farmer's market near you. Even if you're on a budget or tight for space like me, there are always options. Supporting local businesses is something I will always advocate for and buying from sellers at a farmer's market is a great way to do that! For whatever reason you see fit, even if it solely to spend some time in the fresh air, I hope this post can inspire you to visit your local farmer's market! :)

Wishing you countless springy Saturdays,

-M
